Balanan Lake

Balanan Lake

Located near the Town of Siaton 40 kilometers south of Dumaguete, Lake Balanan has become a key eco-tourist destination in Negros Oriental.

Created only in 1922 when a severe 6.8 richter scale earthquake caused a shift in the mountain terrain, the lake is fed by three streams and features a waterfall. Surrounded by century old Balite (Banyan) trees, Balanan is a remote but easily accessed natural attraction. In the last year Balanan Lake has undergone major developement as a tourist destination. There are now more visitor amemities at the lake, but they are in keeping with the natural surroundings.

There is a tree house available for overnight guests as well as a swimming pool. Swimming is not allowed in Balanan lake for safety reasons. Paths to hike, kayaks and boats to paddle, and large floating tethered rafts are available. In addition a restaurant is also located at the lake.

Drive south on the National Highway south through the town of Siaton. (50 minutes by car from Dumaguete). After crossing the river at the south end of town, there will be a sign and a road to the right. The lake is 10 Kilometers from there. The mountain road is rough in some spots, but is now concrete for much of the climb. The rural scenes along the road to Balanan are worth the trip in itself.
